Mersey Television

Mersey Television
Mersey Television is the company set up and owned by Phil Redmond. Its output includes the realist soap opera Brookside, which since 1982 has provided Channel 4 with its most highly-rated programme. In keeping with the channel’s commitment to ‘difference’, Brookside has frequently presented an alternative image of family life, and storylines have been developed that engage serious social issues such as unemployment, heroin addic-tion and lesbianism. Mersey Television is Britain’s largest independent production company, and its setting up in Liverpool not only provides much-needed jobs for the local work force but also challenges the metropolitan orientation of the television industry and extends the opportunities for television production and training in the regions.
